Medical Education
St. Joseph Mercy Oakland (SJMO) has been a leader in training physicians for over 40 years. Medical education is a central part of the overall mission of SJMO and a pillar of the hospital, supporting our outstanding patient care and research and our commitment to our community.
We are approved by the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education (ACGME) to offer residency training in internal medicine, surgery and radiology, as well as offering a transitional year. Additionally, we have been approved by the American Osteopathic Association (AOA) to offer an internship program, and by the American College of Osteopathic Obstetricians & Gynecologists (ACOOG) to offer osteopathic residency training in obstetrics and gynecology.

"The needs of the community have changed in the last decade and our renovations and expansion were designed to address those needs," says Susan Zonia, Ph.D., chief academic officer at SJMO. "We are fortunate to have the commitment of over 200 board-certified physicians to our educational programs," she adds.
