Osteopathic Internship Program
Message from the Osteopathic Internship Program Director
The Osteopathic Internship at St. Joseph Mercy-Oakland (SJMO) was approved by the American Osteopathic Association (AOA) in December, 2006. The objective of the Osteopathic Internship is to provide broad exposure to multiple disciplines, which will aide in the preparation of training in a specific residency.
The Transitional Internship provides exposure to diverse fields of internal medicine (and sub-specialities), surgery, pediatrics, OB/GYN, radiology, emergency medicine, and physical medicine. Interns will be evaluated monthly in their acquisition of knowledge and skills in the core competencies.
Program Structure
Following AOA guidelines, the traditional intern* will complete the following rotations:
- Internal Medicine: 8 weeks
- Emergency Medicine: 4 weeks
- Family Medicine: 4 weeks
- Primary Care Electives: 8 weeks
- ICU: 4 weeks
Academic Conferences
All disciplines that are involved in the internship
rotations contribute to the academic experiences of learners on the service.
These include morning conference, journal club, grand rounds, ethics
rounds, morbidity and mortality, tumor board, research lectures and specialty
conferences. Additionally, there are weekly OMT workshops held in conjunction with Pontiac Osteopathic Hospital, that are given to enhance skill, and assist with integration of this modality in the day-to-day care of patients.

Please note: Applicants must be U.S. citizens, permanent residents of the U.S., or have a work authorization card or a J1 visa. Applicants for this program must also be graduates of AOA approved medical schools.
