Message from the internal medicine program director
Welcome to the internal medicine information page at St. Joseph Mercy Oakland. The program is fully accredited by the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education (ACGME). The objective of the internal medicine training program is to provide educational experiences in the discipline of internal medicine encompassing the study and practice of health promotion, disease prevention, diagnosis, and care and treatment of men and women from adolescence to old age, during health and all stages of illness.Key to the study of medicine are the understanding of scientific knowledge, the scientific method of problem solving, evidence-based decision making, a commitment to lifelong learning, and an attitude of caring that is derived from humanistic and professional values.
Program structure
The program follows all rules and requirements of
the ACGME and the American Board of Internal Medicine (ABIM). All work-hour
rules and admission limitations are followed. Below is a sample curriculum
of the 36-month supervised graduate medical educational experience.

All residents are evaluated in the six general competencies: patient care, medical knowledge, interpersonal and communication skills, professionalism, systems based practice and practice-based learning.
Academic conferences
The SJMO internal medicine residency program excludes
a well defined curriculum, with time set aside for formal didactic.
There is a minimum of 150 hours of conference time per year. More specifically,
the conference topics are:
- Core conferences—Six per month or 72 per year:

Work hours and time off
The Internal Medicine Residency Program follows
all ACGME rules and regulations for work hours and time off.
Application requirements
- Applicants must pass USMLE Step 1 & 2 on first attempt must score 80 or above
- Graduation from medical school within 5 years
- Accept Citizenship, Green Card, Permanent Resident, EAD, J1's only
- Applications through ERAS only
- No U.S. experience required
- ECFMG certificate if applicable
