Faith-Based Community Nursing

St. Joseph Mercy Oakland (SJMO) works with numerous churches in the community to address their members’ health care needs and provide the appropriate health care assistance and connects them with the parishioners.

The program is staffed by a licensed professional nurse, who as a parish minister, seeks to identify causes of illness to foster health and healing within the individual, the environment and the individual’s relationship with God. The parish nurse serves various roles:

  • As a minister:
    • Provides assistance to both individuals and families by attending to their crises, problems and personal questions.
    • Serves as an extension of God’s love and spiritual healing for the people who seek aid.
  • As an educator:
    • Provides health information.
    • Teaches people to take care of their physical, emotional and spiritual well-being.
    • Trains people to attend to others’ health needs.
  • As a counselor:
    • Provides advice on previously recognized or potential personal health problems.
    • Aids in securing additional help or assistance.
  • As an organizer:
    • Assists in identifying the congregation’s health needs.
    • Plans and implements actions in addressing those needs through the use of parish volunteers and community resources.

SJMO, its parent company, Trinity Health, and participating area churches sponsor Faith-Based Community Nursing.
